The Orgnac Aven, the Cave of the Orgnac Aven, the only sinkhole certified « Great
Site of France » is part of the most visited and the most studied underground sites.
Giant palmtrees, piles of plates, organ case, columns, ochre drapery abound under ceilings reaching up to 55 meters high. Explored for the first time in 1935 by speleologist Robert de Joly, it was opened to the public a few years later.
A museum, the City of Prehistory, opened on the Great Site of the Orgnac Aven too. It offers exhibition spaces for archaeological searches carried out in the Ardèche and in the north of Gard, embellished with a temporary exhibition and a fun and interactive approach to Prehistory : tactile tables, multi-player games, videos, full-scale animals, prehistoric events…
Multi-faceted site, speleological outings are organized all year round in undeveloped networks and walking trails give access to the local heritage of the woods of Orgnac.
Opening : from February 1 to November 15, every day. Hours vary depending on the period. Re-opening for the Christmas holidays.
